STROOM introduces: Sam Duijnstee

We would like to introduce our colleagues to you. In this interview you will get to know Sam Duijnstee, Research and Insight intern in Rotterdam.

Who are you and where are you from?

I am Sam Duijnstee, raised in the most beautiful coastal town in the Netherlands, Katwijk. Life is quieter here. Rest can be found here in a dune or beach walk. Unlike the city, the pace of life is slower and people are less likely to make a fuss. I am an only child. My parents together have 3 electronics specialty stores in the bulb region that they enjoy running. I completed my bachelor's degree in Business Administration at Erasmus University and I am currently in the final phase of the master's degree in Strategic Management which I am also doing at Erasmus University. I ended up in Rotterdam for my studies and because I wanted to be part of the student life here and thus leave the village life.

What is your position at STROOM and how do you fill it?

I recently started as a Research and Insight intern. In my first week so far, a lot of new experiences and tools are coming my way. This takes some shifting but I like it. I work a lot together with Erik Rinia and Daniel Rietveld who guide me in this process. I haven't really worked for clients yet, but what I see passing by is a large portfolio of different clients. What I like about my job so far is the diversity and research. What lies next in my future, I'm not sure yet. I first want to gain a lot of experience to see what really suits me and get better at it. Before this, I worked at the member service center of the ANWB. Here I gained a lot of customer contact. This can range from nice conversations with enthusiastic members/colleagues to angry customers with whom I find the right solution to continue the cooperation in the future.

What energizes you in your work?

I get a lot of energy from colleagues who want to achieve certain goals but also provide sociability in the workplace. I really like the combination between customers and data use.

What do you get energy from in your free time?

In my free time, I get energy from different things. Having drinks with friends on the terrace is always fun. I also try to work out 3 times a week at the gym. I also sometimes go to a festival. This is where my passion for music comes to the fore. I sometimes play at parties and festivals. My favorite genre is house, so once in a while I go to parties like that.

What is your favorite meal?

My favorite meal is sushi. I eat this about once a month when finances allow😉.In my house, food does get ordered regularly. This is usually Sunday regular, but the meal actually varies every week. This can be a burger but also roti, for example. There is little I don't like. As long as there is no shrimp in it because I am allergic to that.

What is your favorite vacation or vacation country?

My favorite vacation is a mix between relaxing and doing. This is in a warm country. No specific country. I can't just lie by the pool (although this is very nice), but I also like to see things of the surroundings. So a balance between relaxing and doing things is very important to me.

Which sports do you prefer to watch and which sport do you play yourself?

My favorite sport is soccer. My favorite club is Feyenoord. I watch every game and the next step is a season ticket. From the age of 6 to 20 I played soccer at Quick Boys in Katwijk. This is also the youth club Dirk Kuyt. Here I played for a number of years at a reasonably high level but eventually went for fun in a friends team. Meanwhile I try to go to the gym three times a week to hang in the weights and every now and then I walk around the Kralingse Plas. That's how I try to keep myself fit.

What do you personally like the most, how much time do you spend on it and what are your favorite TV shows, radio stations, podcasts and social media?

My favorite medium is Instagram. Here I spend about an hour a day on it. On TV I like to watch reality TV or feel good programs like long live love. Radio I don't really listen to myself. I mostly use Spotify where I listen to my own playlists.

What is your favorite quote and why?

I'm not really into quotes myself, but if I had to choose one it would be: veni, vidi, vici by Ceasar. This was the first quote I learned when I started grammar school in high school. In elementary school I was told to do vmbo and if I really persevered havo. However, through perseverance it turns out that I got gymnasium and a bachelor's degree at university. This still feels like a victory to me.

What can people wake you up at night for?

Friends in need and Sushi

What is your guilty pleasure?

Reality TV like Ex on the Beach

What is your favorite movie or series and why?

My favorite series is Lupin. I finished this one in 4 days. The most gripping story and well put together series in my opinion.
