Jim Tulen

My time as a content marketing intern at STROOM

From the beginning of September until the end of January, I, Jim Tulen, had the opportunity to take on the Content Marketing Intern position at media agency STROOM . Here I am happy to look back on the fun activities I had the opportunity to perform for STROOM.

Background
I began my third year as an HBO student with a blossoming passion for media and content but little knowledge about it. Within my studies in Sports Marketing & Management, not much attention is given to media. Despite that, I gained some experience in my last project in year 2 where we founded our own start-up company. With this start-up we tried to get young Rotterdammers into sports and create a winner's mentality in them. Within our own start-up it was my job to create, devise and plan content for this company. This tasted like more.

I was looking for an internship where I could broaden my passion for content and learn more about media, so STROOM was the ideal first choice for me.

Activities
As a Content Marketing Intern, I had the lead in various marketing activities. For example, my biggest responsibility was maintaining the content calendar. Every Monday the content team met and together we filled the calendar with interesting and relevant content. We got a lot of input for this from both our Rotterdam and Amsterdam offices. We planned the content 2 weeks ahead so that we could publish enough each week.

Every week I was hard at work creating content for the various STROOM channels. It was very nice to have people watching me who know a lot about content. This way I could constantly bring out the best in myself and we were able to create very nice content. In addition, there was always someone ready to support me when I needed it. That way we functioned as a real team.

Bundraiser
My favorite project this internship period was very clear to me: the Justdiggit & STROOM Bundraiser!
The Bundraiser was an initiative of STROOM to raise money for Justdiggit through donations. Justdiggit is a charity dedicated to greening Africa. By organizing an evening dedicated to Justdiggit filled with entertainment from the STROOM band and a fun pub quiz, among others, we were able to green some 23,000m2 of land!

I was lucky enough to be in both the preparation and communication of this amazing event. During the Bundraiser, I was busy shooting content and then making beautiful creations out of it. I was able to express my creativity in this. I received many positive and nice reactions about the end result, which did me a lot of good.

Besides this great project, I also got tremendous pleasure from the various get-togethers, outings and the company of this great STROOM team. STROOM is a team with a great team spirit. The atmosphere made it really fun for me to come to the office.

Development
In these past few months I have gained an enormous amount of knowledge and experience. On the one hand on the content level where I learned, among other things, how to use your planning effectively and how to look at the longer term in relation to the quality of the production. This is something that will be very useful to me in the future. And of course also what to look for in creating content and how to trigger people.

On the other hand, I mainly learned about the power of media and what you can achieve with it. By being surrounded by media specialists every day, you learn a lot. I was therefore not only involved in content activities but also in other media-related activities such as guest lectures or knowledge sessions.

I am very grateful to STROOM for the opportunities I have been given here. This internship has taught me a lot about the media and content world. Furthermore, I was able to further develop myself as a marketer but also as a person.
